Completing an Antique Safe Restoration

In our last blog post, we started to walk you through the steps of antique safe restoration. But it’s a complicated process with more steps than we could fit in a single post. So, to give you the complete picture, we’re going to finish our look at how we restore an antique safe. Antique safes are beautiful pieces and, with proper upkeep, can also be functional.

Here’s a look at the second half of the antique safe restoration process.

Reassembly

In the first part of the list, we left off after refinishing the various parts of the safe. Now that all the parts are in good condition, we can reassemble the safe. When we took the safe apart, we carefully documented the process so we know how to put it back together. Once all the parts are back in place, we test the locking mechanism.

Security Features

If the customer intends to use the safe to store valuables, we can upgrade its security features to meet relevant modern safety standards. We also have methods of disguising modern upgrades to preserve the safe’s antique aesthetics. However, if you plan to use the safe as a statement piece, we simply ensure the original or restored locking mechanism is functional.

Preservation

Once we have reassembled the safe and restored or upgraded the locking mechanism, we ensure the safe stays in good condition. To preserve the safe, we apply a protective coating to help prevent rust, corrosion, and deterioration. But there’s only so much we can do as part of the restoration process. It’s important to keep the safe in a controlled environment where it won’t be exposed to harsh conditions, such as excessive heat or moisture.

Documentation and History

Antique safes are not just curious specimens; they’re a look into history. To maintain the legacy of every antique safe we restore, we keep a detailed record of the restoration process. We also do as much research as we can into the history of the safe model and each particular safe if there are any records available.
